Here's what most people get wrong about COAs. A Certificate of Analysis proves that a test was performed on some sample. It does not prove that the sample came from your vial, and it does not prove that the company posting it is the company that ordered the test.
That gap opens two doors. The first is reuse — one good vial gets tested once, and thousands of units are sold against that single document. The second is theft — a vendor posts a genuine COA that belongs to someone else entirely, often their own upstream supplier. In both cases the PDF is completely real. Checking that a document isn't forged only defeats forgery, which was never the main problem.

. That is not a criticism of the lab. It is an honest description of what a lab can and cannot certify — and it is exactly why a ladder of proof exists instead of a single yes-or-no answer.

Notice what changes as you climb. It isn't the quality of the science — the analytical method may be identical at every level. What changes is who chose the sample. That single variable is the whole ballgame.
Pick a product you're considering and walk these in order. It takes a few minutes and it is the most useful thing you can do before spending anything.
Level five costs real money: sending a vial to an established independent lab runs roughly $60–90 per sample. That sounds like a lot until you set it against the order it protects. On a multi-hundred-dollar order, a one-time test is a modest fraction of the spend, and it is the only route where you personally control the chain of custody from vial to instrument.
My honest read: most people don't need level five for every purchase. It makes the most sense the first time you try a new vendor, or when the order size is large enough that being wrong is expensive. For everything after that, levels two and three — a portal-resolving COA with a matching lot — is a reasonable place to live.
