# What Does ISO 17025 Mean for a Peptide Lab?

_ISO 17025 is the accreditation standard for testing labs. Here's what it actually means, why 'ISO 17025-aligned' is a red flag, and how to check if a lab is really accredited._

> **Short answer:** ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the **competence of testing and calibration laboratories**. A lab that is **accredited** to it has been independently audited to prove its methods and results are reliable. The catch: **"ISO 17025-aligned" or "ISO-standard methods" is NOT accreditation** — it's weasel wording that borrows the credibility without earning it.

## Accredited vs. "aligned"

- **Accredited** = a recognized accreditation body audited the lab and issued a certificate with a scope. It's a checkable, specific status.

- **"Aligned" / "follows ISO 17025 methods"** = a marketing phrase any lab can write about itself, with no audit and no certificate behind it.

If a "lab" leans on the second phrasing, treat the accreditation claim as decoration.

## How to check (free)

- **Ask for the accreditation certificate + the accrediting body's name.** Real accreditation is documented.

- **Look it up on the accreditation body's public register.** Accredited labs are listed publicly; "aligned" ones won't be.

- **Check the scope.** Accreditation covers specific methods — make sure it actually covers the testing they're selling (e.g. HPLC/LC-MS purity), not something unrelated.

## The bigger picture

Accreditation is one signal — but for peptides, **independence matters even more than the badge.** A captive lab could in theory be accredited and still be grading its own homework.
